NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY

Mission: To exercise command and area coordination over assigned activities, to coordinate provisions, logistics and administrative support to; (a) Authorized U.S. personnel attached to NATO Commands located in the Naples area, and (b) U.S. Navy operating forces, Naval activities and units in the Naples/Gaeta area and other U.S. agencies as directed and to carry out responsibilities for other U.S. Naval matters assigned by competent authority.

History: With the build up of Soviet forces to the East, and with Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSouth) fulfilling the land, sea and air role for NATO's right flank, it became necessary to establish a naval support unit ashore. This was done on October 3, 1951 by establishing Headquarters, Support Activities (HEDSUPPACT). Its primary mission was to support AFSouth, and later, the SIXTH Fleet. In December 1952, the Commanding Officer was re-designated as Commander, and in August, 1953 the support unit became Commander, Subordinate command, U.S. Naval Forces Eastern Atlantic / Commander, Headquarters Support Activities, Naples Italy (COMSUBMOMNELM/COMHEDSUPPACT). In November 1957, it was re-designated U.S. Naval Activities, Italy (NAVACTS Italy) and a new activity was established out of COMHEDSUPPACT, the U.S. Naval Support Activity, Naples (NAVSUPPACT Naples). At this time the officer in command had primary duty as Commander, U.S. Naval Support Activity, Naples. On 8 Aug 1966, U.S. Naval Activities, Italy consolidate with U.S. Naval Support Activity, Naples. The CO of the Naval Support Activity was assigned additional duty as Deputy Commander Fleet Air Mediterranean (COMFAIRMED) and as such he acted as the district's commandant in all functions related to COMFAIRMED's shore activities. NAVSUPPACT Naples retained operational control over the Commissary and the Naval Publications and Printing Service office. All other activities in Italy and southern France were placed under the coordination of COMFAIRMED. In addition to providing assistance and service to military organizations and their related functions, NAVSUPPACT Naples supports the DoDDS school system in the Naples area. In April 2004 Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSouth ) was re-designed as Joint Force Command Naples (JFCN).

The City Naples is a surprisingly large city, and a sprawling one, with a centre that has many different focuses. The area between Piazza Garibaldi and Via Toledo, roughly corresponding to the old Roman Neapolis (much of which is still unexcavated below the ground), makes up the old part of the city - the centro storico - the main streets still following the path of the old Roman roads. This is much the liveliest, most teeming part of town, an open-air kasbah of hawking, yelling humanity that makes up in energy what it lacks in grace. Buildings rise high on either side of the narrow, crowded streets, cobwebbed with washing; there's little light, not even much sense of the rest of the city outside - certainly not of the proximity of the sea.
